History of NRIPC

The inception of the Northern RockiesInvasive Plant Council (NRIPC) began at the February 2008Invasive Species in Natural Areas Conference in Missoula, Montana, where university and agency researchers met for 2 1/2 days with land managers of the Rocky Mountain States to discuss possibilities and problems specific to the management of invasive species in natural areas. Two-hundred twenty participants from seven states and two Canadian provinces attended 60 presentations. Over 100 of the participants surveyed agreed that an official non-profit Invasive Plant Council should be formed.

George Horne from the South Florida Water Management District presented an eye opening keynote address on the Everglades invasive animal problems.

Joe DiTomaso from UC Davis presented the second keynote address on restoration strategies.

The four conference organizers decided to move forward with this idea. The NRIPC was incorporated in the state of Idaho in September of 2008 and the non-profit was given official 501(c)3 status in January of 2009. The four conference organizers became the board of directors. The NRIPC is currently working on organizing the next upcoming conference at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in October of 2010.
